Real Life in: Cuba – Part 2 (Varadero)

I bet you guys thought I forgot about the rest of the Cuba series! (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check out the first part of the Real Life in Cuba series here).
Our stay in Cuba wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Varadero, so we bundled ourselves into a taxi and set off on the two-hour journey for a day at the beach.
We made a pit stop about an hour into the journey to stretch our legs and take in the sights – and what a gorgeous sight it was. Lush is the word that keeps coming to mind when I think of Cuba – the greenery was so…well…green!
We got to Varadero and tbh were a bit at a loss because we expected to just rock up at the beach, but actually you (ideally) need to get a day pass to one of the hotels and that gives you access to their amenities, food and private stretch of beach. There are other options but this was the best one for us.
We strolled around the (massive) resort, had some lunch and made our way to the beach.
I don’t know if you’re the same, but I absolutely love being near the water – not necessarily in it, mind you – just near it! This beach was so stunning and serene…
…Well, not for long by the time we arrived – I mean did you even go to the beach if you didn’t leave with a picture of yourself jumping?!
…or making a man do push ups with you on his back?!
That’s all for now, but there’s one more part to come – featuring more of our adventures in Havana. There may even be a cheeky salsa video…

Thanks so much! I definitely feel like I need another vacation 😁
So funny! I lived in Havana for about 6 months 15 years ago, amazing to see it open up like this. How long did you stay? What was the coolest thing you learned? Here are my thoughts on the islands new tourist boom https://www.internationality.me/magazine/articles/cuba/

We were there for a couple of weeks and it was brilliant. As a Nigerian I have been fascinated by the links between Cuban and West African culture for a long time so it was interesting to learn more about that. Dancing salsa again for the first time in a while was another bonus!
I checked out your article – a great read. I think it’s definitely striking how little people make and live on. It seemed to me like the tourism industry was the best way to get by for a lot of people. Hopefully the increased tourism helps with development on the whole.
Awesome post with some quality pictures👌👌
Thanks Sanyam 🙂
